ROBERTO
CEPEDA & BOMBA ACHÉ
FRIDAY DECEMBER 4, 8:00 PM
Featuring
fiery drumming, powerful and sensual dances and hypnotizing
chants, this
one-time-only performance will produce a spirit of celebration
and cultural pride for all to share.
Lose yourself in the rhythms at Villa Victoria Center for
the Arts, (formerly known as Casa de La
Cultura/Center for Latino Arts) with master drummer and dancer
ROBERTO CEPEDA and his
ensemble Bomba Aché.
Considered to be the best Bomba dancer in the world; Cepeda
will lead some of the top artists in the
age-old Afro-Puerto Rican music and dance traditions of Bomba
and Plena. Roberto Cepeda belongs
to the world-renowned Puerto Rican folklore institution, La
Familia Cepeda. His father, Don Rafael
Cepeda and his mother Doña Caridad Brenes were the
pioneers who took Bomba and Plena from
Puerto Rico onto stages and theatres all over the world. Born
in 1952, Roberto Cepeda works hard to
carry on the tradition of this great art form. He performs
extensively with his group, offering master
classes and workshops on drumming and dancing, as well as
performing with leading Puerto Rican
artists. His group Bomba Aché joins the talents of
outstanding musicians and dancers, including the
internationally-acclaimed percussionist Anthony Carrillo.
In addition to this public performance,
Roberto Cepeda and his group will offer a matinee performance
for children from South End schools
and music and dance workshops for youth from the Villa Victoria
affordable housing community and
the broader South End/Lower Roxbury neighborhood.
